Dubai-based airline Emirates will operate flights to Dubai and Ahmedabad, India from Dar es Salaam, starting October.

Emirates area manager for Tanzania Bader Abdulnoor Ahli, told The EastAfrican that the firm will launch six flights a week to operate between Dubai and Ahmedabad at the start of the winter timetable, on October 28.

The flights will be operated in two- and three-class configurations using the modern A330-200 and Boeing 777-200 aircraft.

The Emirates’ Dubai-Ahmedabad service will take approximately three hours, and will inject over 1,500 passenger seats and 100-plus tonnes of cargo capacity per week into the route.

The airline currently operates daily non-stop direct flights with an Airbus 330-200 from Dar es Salaam to Dubai and onward to over 84 destinations worldwide including the East African region, Africa, Middle East and South Asia.

Mr Ahli said that the new route is setting the stage yet again for increased co-operation between the United Arab Emirates and India and is providing a first direct link between India’s sixth largest city, and Dubai.

Ahmedabad is the latest in a series of new routes, namely Newcastle, Sao Paulo, Toronto, and Houston, to be launched by the Dubai-based airline this year. It also represents Emirates’ fourth Indian gateway in a span of less than two years, the others being Thiruvananthapuram, Kolkata and Bangalore — all launched in 2006.

“I am confident the new, direct link will stimulate increased commerce and tourism exchanges between long-standing partners UAE, India and the East African region,” Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum, chairman and chief executive of the Emirates said in a statement.

Emirates commenced services to Tanzania in October 1997 and on July 2003, it launched daily Dar-Dubai service through Nairobi. On March 2006, it introduced four non-stop Dar-Dubai flights.

Emirates’ global route network currently spans 87 cities in 60 countries including Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, Europe, the Far East, Indian subcontinent, North America and other African countries.

Currently, more than 50 per cent of all flight movements in and out of Dubai International Airport are Emirates aircraft.
