Shri Harivallabhdas Kalidas Arts College

Known as the H.K Arts college this institution is managed by 155 years old Gujarat Vidyasabha, Brahmachari Wadi Trust . Gujarat Vidyasabha was founded by Sir Alexander Kinlock Forbes an English officer in 1848. Initially it was known as Gujarat Vernecular Society. It aimed of the development of Gujarati language and literature. Renowned Gujarati poet Dalpatram was the first secretary of the institution. This institution has been fortunate enough to get the services of scholars, men of letters and social workers. This institution has pioneered many activities in the field of literature and culture. The credit of starting the first newspaper in the state the first girls school and the first monthly magazine “Buddhiprakash” goes to the institute. Considering libraries to be basic to education and culture it took on the work of translating important books from all disciplines in to Gujarati. This institution has published more than a thousand books. It was this institution that saw the dream of establishing the Gujarat University under the leadership of late shri Anandshankar Dhruv and late Shri Dadasaheb Mavlankar the first speaker of Indian Parliament they also played an important role in translating this dream into reality. It also supported post graduate teaching and research and founded the BJ Institute of Indology. When established in 1955 the college was known as Ramanand Mahavidhyalaya. Later Shri Jaykrishna Harivallabhdas the pioneering industrialist donated Rs.4 Lakhs in the memory of his father and the college got its present name of Shri Harivallabdas Kalidas Arts College. The College was inaugurated by the well Known philosopher and the former Vice President of India Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan. The college was fortunate enough to get the services of Shri Yashwant Shukla the well known critic and educationist as the principal.
By the help of its dedicated and devoted teachers and by providing all the modern facilities, the college has provided an atmosphere conducive to the all-round development of the students. This is done by organizing seminars, debates discussions general knowledge quiz, dramatics, sports and other activities. There is also a staff reading club where important books of different disciplines are discussed. We have a large number of teachers who have either PhD or M.Phil. This is the only college in Gujarat which teaches twelve(12) main subjects and four (4) subsidiary subjects. The college also runs a postgraduate center. Under the aegis of ‘UGC professional courses plan’ the college runs a computer centre. The college has its own web-site,(www.hkartscollege.org) and has e-mail and surfing facilities for students.
To develop the creative writing ability and promote scientific temper The college regularly publishes a magazine named ‘Sabarmati’ every Year. The college also has a wallpaper ‘Setu’ , and a hand writtenMagazine ‘pamrat’ (Aroma) the birthday of the poet Umashankar Joshi is celebrated as “Book Day” , on this day each teacher speaks to his class about his favourite book. The college has a well equipped library and reading room . The college has well equipped laboratories for psychology and Geography . Thu UGC awarded the best reputed college award to the institution and given Rs 7lacks to which the college added Rs 4 lacks and constructed a modern well equipped conference hall cum language laboratory. The college can boast of modern assembly hall with a capacity of 700 seats.
The college also runs a medical health center and a counseling center . The college has achieved great height in NCC , NSS and sports , in case of natural calamities the students and teachers of the college have always rushed to help the victims. The college caters to the needier section , of the society and strives to inculcate basic but eternal values. It aims at creating a consciousness towards the community and country . It ultimately aims at making society a better place to leave in .During its 49 years the college has produced personalities belonging to varied fields viz Vice – chancellors, Judges, Advocates, IAS Officers, Police Officers, eminent artist, Professors, Journalist, Social Workers, Writers and people of merit and vision in all walks of life. Now at the dawn of its 50th year the college would like his excellency the president of India to provide a beacon of enlightenment to illuminate newer vistas of education, and ignite young minds with vision and commitment, and to felicitate some of the eminent personalities produced by this college.
